Traditional leadership plays a vital role in South Africa’s democratic landscape, especially in rural areas. Traditional leaders operate within constitutional structures, and their authority remains central to everyday governance. Within this context, the Royal Houses of the fourteen recognised Kingdoms of South Africa, are critical to the functioning of the institution of traditional leadership.
The recent launch of the Kings and Queens Forum by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) marks an historic moment of cooperation between Royal Houses and with the South African government.
